Sunday Morning Coming Down
Mom was moved into a nursing home yesterday, but that is not a subject for The Lord’s Day, is it?
No. A subject for The Lord’s Day is Doug.
I just went in to awaken him. I’ve been up for eons, but Doug is not one to rise without a bit of encouragement.
“It’s nearly twenty till eight,” I said. “You’ll want to be getting up if you plan to go to church.”
He rolled over, looked at the clock, and said, “It’s 7:37.”
“Yeah. That’s what I said.”
“No, you said twenty till eight. There’s a difference. In the MORNING, it sounds much better if you say it with the 7 than with the 8.”
“But it’s the same thing.”
“No, Katy. It’s very, very different.”
This is the second new and very extremely weird thing I’ve learned about my husband of 31 years in the past couple of weeks. Here is the other:
If I decide on a complete whim to flip the roll of toilet paper so that it’s hanging against the wall rather than the correct way, Doug will flip it forward the next time he’s in the bathroom.
Then, if I flip it again (ten minutes later) just to see what he’ll do (remember, we are the ONLY TWO PEOPLE in this house), he will return it to the correct position on his next visit.
Furthermore, if he hears me laughing uproariously from the vicinity of the toitie multiple times per day over a five-day period, he will NOT ask me why I’m laughing.I guess he figures I’ve got a new issue of Reader’s Digest or something.
And when I cannot bear the hysterics any longer and confess that I’ve been flipping the TP for five days, he will admit that IT NEVER OCCURRED to him that ANYONE was switching it up—only that it was hung incorrectly.
I hope you have enjoyed this little peek into the lives of an empty nesting couple. Now, I’ve got to go give Doug another wake-up nudge.
It’s five minutes till eight.

Fallible Comments...
- Funny! I just take the roll and stick it on...with no care as to whether it's coming out of the top or bottom. But, Marc just informed me that he switches it every time I put it on "wrong". Wrong is the bottom apparently.

- Carrie Woman--Were you raised by WOLVES? Ha-ha. Seriously, honey. There's only one right way to do it. Marc's way. And while many people do it WRONG, I've never heard of anyone whose toilet-paper door swung both ways. ;) You are a one-of-a-kind.

- I'm happy to remember to buy toilet paper, which is why we keep a box of Puffs in the "powder" room just in case.

- Glad to see your mom made it out of the hospital....of course, I'm sure you wish she could have gone back to her apartment. How are YOU doing? As often as I wish my parents had lived to be older (I would have loved for them to know my husband and their grandkids, I am grateful that I have not had to make the decisions that you are and have been making. I'll be praying for you. Love you and Doug....

- Katy, this story is hilarious. It reminds me of a Christmas decoration my husband and I have. It's in the shape of a train, and its cars spell out the word NOEL. The first time my husband realized the cars unhitched from each other, he started rearranging the letters to say "Leon" and waiting to see how long it took me to notice. For the longest time, I blamed my kids for messing with it while my husband just laughed.
Silly spouses.
Glad to hear your mother is on the mend.

- Christa--I am a TP fanatic. I could run out of milk, eggs, bread, anything, and not care. But give me TP or give me death!!! It's like the best invention ever. :)
Mary Anne--I have another friend who was a young "orphan" who has expressed the same sentiments as yours. It's a quandary, but of course, one over which only God has the final say. Still, I never understood how complicated or LONG-TERM this would be. Love you, too, and thank you for your prayers!!
Jamesie--If I ever need wisdom on how to be roomies with Dougie, I can always look to you!! :)
Kathryn--I LOVE your story!!! A train with the message "Leon." The thing is, we blame our kids for ALL THIS STUFF until they finally move out. Then we realize it might have been our SPOUSES all along!!! Ha.

- Well, well, well, we really do have a lot more in common than my daughter and your son! If the toilet roll is NOT so that the paper comes out from underneath, I promptly change it!! I haven't discovered if Ron knows that yet or not!! It just one of those things....
By the way...thanks for the note on Mother's Day! Sorry I haven't responded yet. Your son is so awesome to Brooke. He is a blessing! You must have taught him well!! Thanks! Hope to see you soon.
Love, Syneva
