Reading, Watching, Listening

I plan to spend a fair amount of time this Christmas season curled up with a good book (or movie) and a cuppa something yummy.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read A Christmas Carol during December. And while Doug did not love John Grisham’s Skipping Christmas, I got a huge kick out of it and read it almost every year.

Of course, I can’t survive the holidays without a viewing of It’s A Wonderful Life. Even if I could survive, it would feel wrong.

Now I’d like your suggestions. Any books or movies that have become traditional Christmas fare for you?

Weigh in with your fave Christmas music, too. I’ll share mine: A lovely album called “Let Us Go To Bethlehem,” by Marc Haney and friends. One of the “friends” happens to be Doug Raymond, my favorite musician and singer in the whole universe. This vintage album was recorded in (I think) 1974, but is one for the ages.

I will randomly choose a commenter to receive a CD of “Let Us.” It’s sure to become one of your very own holiday treasures!

Fallible Comments...
  1. I would recommend, without reservation, Andrew Peterson's album Behold the Lamb of God. It's a Christmas CD that traces the story of Christmas from God's promise of a savior in the Old Testament to his fulfillment of that promise in Jesus. I'm doing a great job of describing it, but seriously, I give about 5 copies of it each year as Christmas presents because it's THAT GOOD.

Go to andrew-peterson.com for more information (I'm not a spammer, I'm just excited!!)

  2. I second that, Brandy. I'm probably going to put together a viewing of it here for anyone interested, though I don't know how many service-people might have heard of it before ... but I might be surprised. It's AMAZING!

Also, "A Christmas Story" (movie), of course... and one of my favorite pieces of literature is C.S. Lewis' essay on the meaning of Christmas, which I have a copy of in The Grand Miracle (and other Essays... which did not make it into my shipments to come over here, unfortunately!! I'm very distraught by that, but that's what online shopping is for. Anyway, it's a really great essay, and a must-read as soon before Christmas as it can be found. In fact, it can be found here ... Enjoy!

  3. Brandy, I've been to your blog, and you are indeed NOT a spammer. :) I had not heard of Andrew Peterson, so I am off to check him out!! OMG, I'm going to post another blog entry in a minute, just for YOU.

PattyT, I have enjoyed reading your posts from your military post!! Now, I must admit I have never seen A Christmas Story. So I will! And I will immediately look up Lewis's essay. Thank you!!

  4. All time favorite Christmas CD at our house is Steven Curtis Chapman's The Music of Christmas. His re-working of O Come, O Come Emmanuel is brilliant - and the original songs This Baby and Precious Promise are two of my favorite to sing as Christmas specials in church.

My second favorite is one that we used to listen to every year when I was growing up - on a record! Then on Thanksgiving, my mom brought it to me on CD: The Roger Whittaker Christmas Album. Everyone should hear that one.

My favorite Christmas movie besides It's a Wonderful Life is White Christmas. The scene where Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye lip-sync Sisters is hilarious and I always cry at the end "We'll follow the old man..."

  5. I've been listening a lot the last couple of years to the James Taylor Christmas album that Hallmark put out. I really like "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Some Children See Him" on the album. Then there's always "A Charlie Brown Christmas" soundtrack by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
"A Christmas Story" (movie) is a big favorite in our house too.
And I must read every year Norah Loft's "How Far to Bethlehem" (1964). It's the Christmas story told from the three wise men's various viewpoints (and how they met!) along with Mary and Joseph's stories. A very thoughtful and imaginative novel.
    I love Christmas!

  6. Well, Let Us Go to Bethlehem tops my list of music, as does the Amy Grant Christmas CD. As for books, you can't beat The Polar Express picture book. (The movie is pretty good, too.) And movies...well, Miracle on 34th Street is classic, and The Santa Clause is just darn cute fun. (Jim and the kids love The Christmas Story, but I've never gotten into that one.)

  7. I like "Skipping Christmas" too!
Diamond Rio has a new Christmas C.D. called "The Star Still Shines". Melody

  8. Carrie K--I should definitely get the Chapman music. He's one of my faves. And White Christmas can't be topped. Now Roger Whitaker--I will have to get up to speed on him! Thanks for the recs. You've never led me astray!

Anne--How are you, lady? How's the fam? OK, the James Taylor sounds fantastic and I do not know anything about the Norah Loft novel. I will search on Amazon!! Thanks.

Bridgie--I know of but haven't experienced the Polar Express. I'll give it a try! Have you seen the newer Miracle on 34th Street? Not bad. We still have an LP of Amy Grant's Christmas songs.

melodyrose--Thanks for commenting! I have heard of Diamond Rio and now I will check them out! I appreciate the rec.
