My Hero

I took Doug to get his first in a series of epidurals this morning. As it turns out, my little sister Bridget’s doctor-of-choice, Steve Simon, does not do epidurals. So we went with another recommendation of our primary doctor, and ended up in the care of Dr. Kloster at Menorah Hospital.

From every indication so far, Dr. Kloster will provide the treatment Doug needs, without the attitude. We were more than pleased with the first visit. On the 17th, Doug will have his second shot, and depending on the outcome of the first two, may also have a third.

Unfortunately, though, he now has a new back injury, which doesn’t show up on the MRI or the reports that Dr. Kloster viewed today. When I came home from visiting my mother yesterday, Doug said, “You won’t believe this, but I’ve hurt my back….”

I figured he sneezed or coughed, which is all it takes for me to throw something out, if that something is primed to go.

“What did you do?” I asked.

“I hacked a six-foot long snake to death and bagged up the remains. I didn’t want you to come home and find it hissing at you on the front step.”

Do you see why I love this man? He is my hero.

But, darling, really. Right now, it’s my turn to take care of you.

  2. what i think is unsettling about this story is the fact that there was a six foot long snake on your kansas city steps. it's the midwest, not the amazon! yikes. anyway, your husband is truly a good guy - despite bad back and all - to be hacking up a yard serpent. he deserves some starbucks.

  3. lisa--Doug is manly and gentlemanly, too. A wonderful combination. :)

Joshua--I KNOW!! We live on a small acreage, and there's a one-acre pond filled with snakes next door. We built the house 13 years ago, and the construction guys killed snakes every day. Eeeeewwww. One day a couple years ago, I blogged about how in one week, I found a tarantula, frog, and snake IN MY HOUSE. The freakin' frog was in the TOILET! God has been merciful to me, though, and not let me see any more snakes, even though I know they're here....

  4. You indeed have a hero in your life, but you are right in that it is your time to take care of him.

Next time there is a very large snake in your yard, you just call on me and I will stand right behind you and give you courage to bag that sucker! LOL

  6. Dr. Kloster rocks, too. He is a great doctor! :) ('Cuz as you know, I've seen them all in the last five+ years!) He is the one who did one of discography tests. That was the test from hell that I had which, as they stuck long needles in my neck, was meant to replicate my pain. It is the worst "test" I've ever had to do at a doctor. Dr. Kloster is a good guy, though.
