This Kiss, This Kiss
Doug and I just had one of our very loveliest wedding anniversaries ever—it’s our 30th today!
By 11 this morning, we blew out of the house and into the movie theater. What’s showing for the young and in love these days? One of the best romantic comedies to come down the pike in a LONG time, in our shared opinion—“Music and Lyrics.”
I’m not a big Drew Barrymore fan, but Hugh Grant? He had me at Sense and Sensibility. The man can mix it up chemistry-wise with actresses I’d never picture him with and it works. He and Drew were fabulous together.
Hugh, of course, plays a passe boy-band singer and songwriter in need of a lyricist if he’s ever going to make a comeback. He uses pro-tools to compose on his mac just like my husband does, while Drew’s character dusts off her latent literary skills and writes some winning lyrics.
There are some skimpy costumes and suggestive choreography in a song-and-dance featuring the secondary characters, and Hugh Grant himself does quite a lot of amazing hip swiveling which, in a lesser man, might have afterwards necessitated emergency joint replacement surgery. Having danced that little caveat into place, I highly recommend this movie.
Doug and I are, in fact, inspired to begin writing songs together again. Stay tuned for that!!
After the movie, we went for lunch to a great place on the Plaza called The Classic Cup. Then our kids (miss you, Kevvie!) wanted to meet us at Starbucks to wish us many happy returns of the day, so we spent the last third of our celebration with them, laughing, carrying on, and generally enjoying each other.
All in all, what a thoroughly fun day. Of course, any day spent in the company of such a fine man makes life entirely worth living.
Doug Raymond, can I just say right here that I adore you? You are the one true love of my life. I’m grateful beyond words for the priceless gift God gave me 30 years ago today—you.
You’re my music and my lyrics, from this day forward. Forever and always, I love you.

Fallible Comments...
- Aw, you cuties! Happy Anniversary, Katy and Doug. We're coming up on 28 years in May.
I wondered about that movie. Maybe I'll go see it now.

- Congratulations to you both. 30 years. Wow! I went to see the movie this weekend and thought it was really sweet. However, I went with my daughter and my nephew, so the romance was all on the screen.

- Happy anniversary, Katy! I saw Music & Lyrics over the weekend and absolutely loved it. Made me laugh so much, and Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant)'s sense of humour was so endearing. Dry and witty, just the way I like it. The screenwriters were brilliant.

- Jeanne--You are your handsome fellow, 28 years already? You look like teenagers! Hey, congrats on being accepted into Relief Journal! How fantastic!! About the movie: With you and your hubby both being singers/songwriters/musicians, and you being a choreographer, I really do think you'd get a huge kick out of this show. I have been wrong before, which is why I'm fallible, but this time, I don't think I'm far off the mark. :)
alison--Yeah, but usually I can't even discern it on the screen! Sometimes I'm shocked at the alarming lack of chemistry actors are able to produce. Very few romantic comedies actually work on both fronts, IMO. 30 years, BTW, is both very long and very short...
Sunflower--Growing up with a British father, I latched onto the British humor thing early on. It's my favorite brand of humor still. Hugh Grant has it in spades. The writers MUST have had him in mind when they wrote the script--absolutely perfect for him!

- Congratulations and I too, loved the movie. I saw it yesterday with a friend. Okay, my best to you on your internet fast.
I truly marvel at your strong belief and will remember you in my thoughts during the next 40 days.

- Katy, congratulations. Nick and I celebrated 35 years last November. On Sunday a college student saw us laughing about something and asked how long we'd been married. When I said 35 years, she bugged out her eyes. Then she asked if we knew how "lucky" we were, and told us what the current divorce rate is.
I love growing old together with my college sweetheart.
